Why Septage Pretreatment Matters
Septage is 6 to 80 times moreconcentrated than typical municipal wastewater. Without proper pretreatment, itintroduces rocks, rags, plastics, grease, grit, and other debris that can foulpumps, blind screens, damage downstream equipment, and cause costly plantupsets. The EPA’s 40 CFR Part 503 guidelines require responsible septagemanagement — and treatment plants that accept hauled waste need a reliable, automated receiving system to protect their infrastructure, maintain regulatorycompliance, and recover the costs of processing.
Franklin Miller has beensolving these challenges for decades, with installations across the UnitedStates at facilities handling domestic septage, portable toilet waste, FOG(fats, oils, and grease), and industrial sludge.

System Levels
The Franklin Miller Septage Receiving Station is offered in three expandable levels, allowing you to start with the basics and add capability as needs grow.
Level 1, Instrumentation and Hauler Management, includes a valve manifold, flow metering, card swipe access control, HaulerLogic® software, and a touch screen HMI to automate unloading and track hauler volume for secure access and accurate billing.
Level 2 adds a TASKMASTER® TT inline grinder with an integrated rock trap, tramp trap, and quick access slide gate to remove rocks and grind solids, protecting pumps and downstream equipment.
Level 3 adds a SPIRALIFT® SR screening, washing, compaction, and dewatering system to remove rags, wipes, plastics, and other debris before treatment. With the full Level 3 system, a typical septage truck can unload in about 5 to 15 minutes.

Hauler Station & HaulerLogic® Software
The Hauler Station is a weatherproof control enclosure that provides an automated, self service interface for septage truck drivers. It enables 24/7 unattended operation, allowing haulers to discharge loads without plant personnel on site.
How it works: the driver swipes their access card at the kiosk, the system authenticates the hauler and validates their account, and the driver presses start to initiate automated operation. As the load is discharged, the flow meter records the volume, a transaction receipt is printed for the hauler, and all data is logged in HaulerLogic for billing and compliance reporting.
HaulerLogic® supports hauler authentication via a card swipe system, automated transaction logging with date, time, volume, and hauler ID, historical reporting for billing, compliance, and auditing, debit and credit account management, single or multi station monitoring, and web browser access on desktop and mobile devices.
The system can be supplied with one or two enclosures, depending on site layout and operational requirements.
Key Features & Benefits
The Franklin Miller Septage Receiving Station is a single source system, with the grinder, screen, controller, and software supplied by one manufacturer to eliminate finger pointing between vendors. It is modular and scalable, allowing you to start at Level 1 and upgrade to Level 2 or 3 as needs evolve.
Automated hauler access through card swipe authentication removes the need for on site personnel, while accurate flow metering and transaction logging support true cost recovery for every load. Rock removal, grinding, and screening help protect the plant by preventing damage to pumps, valves, and downstream processes.
Transaction records and load tracking support regulatory compliance, including EPA 40 CFR 503 documentation requirements. Accepting hauled waste from outside your district can also create a new revenue stream, and systems can be fully enclosed to control odors, improve safety, and provide weather protection.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
1Can the septage receiving station operate unattended?
Yes. The Franklin Miller Septage Receiving Station is designed for unattended operation. Haulers use the Hauler Station — a weatherproof control enclosure — for self-service access via ID cards. The HaulerLogic software manages all transaction recording, data logging, and billing automatically.
2How does hauler identification and tracking work?
The Hauler Station controls access with ID cards, authenticates each hauler, records every delivery with volume, date, and time data, and prints receipts. The HaulerLogic software interfaces with the station to manage hauler accounts and generate reports for billing and regulatory compliance.
3What levels of septage receiving systems are available?
Franklin Miller offers three expandable system levels. Level 1 includes instrumentation (pipe manifold, valve, flow meter, controller, and HaulerLogic software). Level 2 adds a TASKMASTER TT grinder for solids removal. Level 3 adds a SPIRALIFT screen for comprehensive pretreatment. Each level builds on the previous one.
4Why is septage pretreatment important?
Septage is 6 to 80 times more concentrated than typical municipal wastewater. Without proper screening and grinding, hauled waste can damage pumps, clog pipes, and disrupt treatment processes. Franklin Miller is the only manufacturer where the grinder, screen, controller, and software are all designed and built by a single company.
